Often recognized by the male’s piercing white eyes, the Hardhead, or White-eyed Duck, is a master of the deep. As Australia’s only "true" diving duck, this species spends its time far from the shore, disappearing beneath the surface for up to a minute to forage for food. Their rich, chocolate-brown plumage and striking white wing-bars make them a beautiful sight in flight, while their nomadic nature leads them across the continent in search of the perfect freshwater sanctuary.
