Callisto, the 10-year-old Amur tiger at Sedgwick County Zoo, has made remarkable progress in her recovery following an acute episode of liver failure. Thanks to the dedicated care of the Zoo’s veterinary and animal care teams, she has recovered well and is now ready to return to her habitat.
Callisto has been behind the scenes while receiving intensive medical care and around-the-clock monitoring. Specialized treatment, supportive husbandry, and the collaborative efforts of veterinarians, veterinary technicians, zookeepers, and nutrition staff were all instrumental in helping her through this critical illness.
As she returns to her habitat, guests may notice a few visible reminders of her recovery. Callisto lost weight during her illness, but she is on a carefully managed nutrition plan to help her regain what she lost. She also developed pressure sores from spending extended periods lying down while recovering. These areas are healing well and are expected to resolve completely over the next couple of weeks, though they may remain noticeable for a short time.
While Callisto will continue to be closely monitored by her care team, her return to habitat marks an exciting milestone in her recovery. We know many members and guests have been following her journey, and we are incredibly grateful for the outpouring of support and well wishes throughout her treatment.
